Top Tips For Buying The Perfect Hat

So, you want a perfect Hat and are unsure where to start?

The biggest thing is to feel CONFIDENT in what you are wearing. COMFORT is next, if you are wearing it all day, you want it to feel like a natural extension. Does it fit with your VALUES, does it shout YOU, from the rooftops?

There are lots of things to take into consideration…

A question to ask yourself first and be honest:

What do you love about yourself, and what makes you unique?

  • Have a good look at your face: Big/small Nose, Eyes, Cheeks, Lips. Scars / Moles / Birthmarks

  • What about the rest of your body:

  • Do you have an individual style or image?

  • Is there anything you want to try and draw attention to or away from and why?

Have you seen something, a style of hat you really like, ask yourself:

Why did you like it?

  • What do you see in that person?

  • Can you picture yourself wearing it?

  • Does it have accessories, feathers, flowers, ribbons or plain?

  • How does it make you feel?

If you haven’t seen anything yet, google a few different styles, or have a look on Folly London Millinery website.

Do you already have your outfit?

What colour is it? - plain/patterned - matching/clashing colours

  • What style is it? - dress/suit/formal/floaty

  • If you do not already have an outfit, do you have an idea of what you want?

  • Consider how the hat will fit with your overall look, have a look at the colours within the outfit to match the hat, it could be a complimentary colour or an accent colour if patterned.

  • Are you planning on wearing the hat again with other outfits, would a neutral colour be a better choice?

Hair is also an important consideration:

Are you planning on having your hair up or down?

  • What is your style of hair, short / mid / long?

  • How are you wearing it, Curly / Straight / Natural?

  • Which side do you want to wear the hat on, traditionally it would sit to the right handside,  if you have a parting wear it on this side, at an angle to your jawline.

Are you worried about having 'hat hair', I recommend looking at those with a headband base, fascinator, or hatinator.

Other things to consider when buying a perfect Hat for you:

If going with a plus 1, if they are a similar height or shorter than you, you may not want one that elongates your silhouette, or the opposite if they are tall.

If you are particularly petite you may not want a large-brimmed hat, as people will not be able to see your face, and could overwhelm you. Something asymmetrical or percher would in my opinion be a better choice.

Have you considered wearing a hat on the back of your head, like the iconic pill box made famous by Jackie Kennedy Onassis?

Everyone and I mean EVERYONE, can wear a hat CONFIDENTLY.

There are no rules to wearing a hat, you just need to make sure it fits with your VALUES and STYLE, it ENHANCES your best bits and coordinates your outfit with ease.

If you are worried about looking silly, you just simply haven't found the right one for you yet, google people in hats do any of those look silly?

Once you have purchased your hat, practice wearing it before the event, and try different hairstyles to see what looks best. Most Hats will sit towards the front of your head, at an angle to your jawline, the biggest common mistake we see is they are placed too far back on the head.

On the day, stand tall, shoulders back, deep breath, you have got this. Go and be fabulous and enjoy yourself.
