Meet the Maker: Discover What Fuels My Creative Fire

Where do your flashes of inspiration come from?

The things you’ve been through, the people you admire, people in your life, friends and family, songs, films, places etc.

It can come from anywhere and everywhere.

Mum & Me

Some of my biggest inspirational moments and what has shaped me over the years is time spent with my family, my earliest memories are sitting with my mum, getting out the glue and crepe paper, cutting up old cereal boxes and creating something fabulous, creativity and art have always played a big part in my life.

Knitting Nan

Knitting Nan

My Nan was a knitter, I would spend hours watching her and decided one day to learn but being as she would put it cack-handed a lefty brought up a few obstacles, me being totally left and Nan being totally right sitting side by side didn’t make sense to the other. One day I was sitting facing her as I usually was when watching, and it clicked by watching her face on, I saw her knitting left-handed, so I learned to knit mirroring Nan.

Salvador Dali Christ of St John on the Cross

Salvador Dali - Christ of Saint John of the Cross 1951 - Studied as part of my Art A Level

I love a modern controversial take on things, people being a little bit rebellious, doing things differently, unapologetically embracing their own style. My favourite artist growing up was Salvador Dali, the surrealism, the colours, the drama. In Fashion Vivienne Westwood is a true badass female legend, and environmental activist campaigner. Being an unconventional and outspoken designer constantly being ahead of the curve, not just influencing fashion, but also dictating it. Director Baz Lurhman, my absolutely favourite film is his portal of Romeo and Juliet, the music, the drama, the emotion, the play on colour styling. My love for Shakespeare began with an absolutely brilliant English teacher, who should have been on stage the way he embraced us when reading a paragraph of Macbeth taking on all the characters with a theatrical flourish.

The natural world nourishes and rejuvenates me, I love a long walk in the countryside or along the seafront, being naturally giving and a good listener, with a nurturing nature, and a heightened intuition. The journey of being an empath is a unique one, difficult to convey fully in words. I've always worn my heart on my sleeve, cried easily at the smallest things and just as quickly burst into hearty, uncontrollable laughter. But it is more than this, you see I feel it too, a noise, a colour, an emotion.

When I embarked on planning my own wedding, I wanted something truly unique that resonated with my values of sustainability and individuality. I just couldn't find it,  which inspired me to become the person I wished to find – someone who understood those who dared to be different. This vision laid the foundation for my business, Folly London Millinery. Each headpiece and design is a testament to my commitment to uniqueness, quality craftsmanship, and sustainability. My creations emerge from my own sketches, and I breathe life into them using a fusion of modern and traditional millinery techniques. With upcycled, pre-loved, or vintage fabrics, every Folly London Headpiece is a one-of-a-kind masterpiece.

My journey as a maker and a seeker of the unconventional has led me to embrace my uniqueness and create beauty from unexpected sources.
